Rings are an absolutely fascinating piece of jewellery and do not just have a rich history, when it comes to their place in the jewellery world in general, but they also hold extremely heavy significance, symbolism and have been used for so many reasons throughout history. Even today rings are used and worn in ways that have direct links to history we probably did not realise or know. We might just look at rings these days and think ‘they make my hands look good’ or ‘this ring finishes off my outfit perfectly’ or we buy a ring to show a loved one how we feel so they have a permanent reminder but all of these reasons have some link back through history.
For example, wedding rings are a great way to demonstrate this. You may have heard that the reason we wear a wedding ring on the left hand, fourth finger, (also commonly known as the ‘ring finger’) is because there is a vein that runs from that finger all the way to our heart. This is then said to symbolise love and permanence. This idea was massively popular in England in the 16th and 17th centuries but amazingly the history goes back even further. This idea with the ‘ring finger’ can be traced even further back to the Romans. Now the Romans said this can supposedly be traced back to the Egyptians but I cannot confirm or deny that so we will have to take the word of a chap called Aulus Gellius who quoted a fella called Appianus. Now apparently Appianus said that the ancient Egyptians had found a nerve linking the ‘ring finger’ finger all the way to the heart. Now I have never mummified a body and I do not plan on doing so I think we will just have to take the Egyptians word for it!
